Jesus Heals a Demon-Possessed Boy
14 When they returned to the other disciples, they saw a large crowd surrounding them, and some teachers of religious law were arguing with them.
15 When the crowd saw Jesus, they were overwhelmed with awe, and they ran to greet him.
16 “What is all this arguing about?” Jesus asked.
17 One of the men in the crowd spoke up and said, “Teacher, I brought my son so you could heal him. He is possessed by an evil spirit that won’t let him talk.
18 And whenever this spirit seizes him, it throws him violently to the ground. Then he foams at the mouth and grinds his teeth and becomes rigid.d So I asked your disciples to cast out the evil spirit, but they couldn’t do it.”
20 So they brought the boy. But when the evil spirit saw Jesus, it threw the child into a violent convulsion, and he fell to the ground, writhing and foaming at the mouth.
21 “How long has this been happening?” Jesus asked the boy’s father.
He replied, “Since he was a little boy.
22 The spirit often throws him into the fire or into water, trying to kill him. Have mercy on us and help us, if you can.”
23 “What do you mean, ‘If I can’?” Jesus asked. “Anything is possible if a person believes.”
24 The father instantly cried out, “I do believe, but help me overcome my unbelief!”
I wanted to share this bible passage with you all and then proceed with the blog. I have heard this story many times in church. Most of the time the focus is the father who asks for Jesus to help his unbelief. That’s great. Other times, I have heard the focus placed on the disciples not being able to cast the evil spirit out. Not so great, but let’s move on. I have never heard the focus placed on the boy. This evil spirit has been THROWING THIS CHILD INTO WATER AND FIRE (yes, I had to put it in all caps) since he was a small child, trying to kill him. My God!
I read this and I wondered what in the world happened to this little boy for him to be demon possessed to this degree. I’m sure there was nothing that this poor defenseless child did to deserve that. I have read in the bible that sometimes children suffer from the sins of the father. I’m not sure if that is the case here, so again, let’s move on. From a child, the enemy sought to scar this boy and kill him. I’m sure that someone reading this can relate. Things have happened in your life and mine that have tried to kill us from birth. And if it didn’t kill us, yes, maybe it did make us stronger. But in the process, we were scarred. Stronger, but scarred! We were scarred making it hard for us to love others or ourselves, trust, or receive all that God has for us. This boy must have been a force and the enemy knew it. I can’t come to any other conclusion because the devil sought to kill him BEFORE he had an encounter with Jesus. Wow! I can only imagine what my life would have been like if I never knew Jesus. If I attempted to deal with all that life has thrown at me since I was child, without God, where would I be today? I don’t even want to entertain those thoughts. What I want to do is encourage someone today. I want to encourage the person who has had things happen to them that they didn’t deserve. Sexual trauma, abuse, poverty, neglect, lack of parenting or support, whatever it is, these things were not your fault. No matter what we have been through, one encounter with Jesus can erase a life time of pain. A lifetime of suffering from depression, anxiety and low self-esteem. Jesus still saves. Jesus still heals. You are still fearfully and wonderfully made. Release the pain of your past to Jesus and be healed. He is a God that can erase your scars. He can turn mourning into dancing and sorrow into joy. He will take all the bad in your life, and turn it for your good. Be encouraged friends, you shall live and not die. God will get the glory out of your life. Until next time, be big, be balanced, be blessed.
